Biography:

JAFFUEL Félix (1874-1939):

French priest and naturalist who spent most of his life in Chile. Jaffuel arrived in Chile as a young novice, continuing to study in Los Perales, Atacama. Alongside his religious work, Jaffuel was an enthusiastic naturalist and collected plants and insects in Chile and Bolivia. He published numerous monographs in the Revista Chilena de Historia Natural and was one of the founders of the Entomological Society of Chile. Among his expeditions were two trips to Bolivia between 1922 and 1924, to Kala Uyu (15 km north of La Paz) and Mururata, collecting at an altitude of 4,500-5,000 meters in each place. He found many mosses which he brought to the attention of his correspondent and friend, the bryologist I. Theriot. He also travelled to Easter Island in 1927 and returned to France in 1939, where he died. Taxa named after him include Gymnachne jaffuelii Parodi, Heliotropium jaffuelii I.M. Johnst. and Senecio jaffuelii Cabrera.

Parallèlement à son office de religieux, Jaffuel fut un naturaliste passionné ayant collecté des plantes et des insectes au Chili et en Bolivie. Il publia de nombreuses monographies dans la Revue Chilienne d'Histoire Naturelle et a été l'un des fondateurs de la Société Entomologique du Chili. Deux de ses expéditions en Bolivie, entre 1922 et 1924, à Kala Uyu (15 km au nord de La Paz) et Mururata, le conduisirent à collecter des spécimens à une altitude comprise entre 4500 et 5000 mètres sur chacun des deux sites. Il découvrit plusieurs mousses qu'il porta à l'attention de son correspondant et ami, le bryologue l.Theriot. Il se rendit également sur l'île de Pâque en 1927 et retourna en France en 1939 où il mourut. Grâce à lui, la Taxonomie s'enrichit de Gymnachne jaffuelii Parodi, Heliotropium jaffuelii I.M. Johnst. and Senecio jaffuelii Cabrera.
